No pain, no gain

Ooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch!
I have not been very religious about working out during the past year. I've worked nights practically my entire career, and switching to day shifts really put the kabosh on my time at the gym. Why, you ask? two reasons. 1) I am just not a 5am workout kindof gal. 2) I may've had the best intentions of going after work, but then my husband or a colleague would say, "C'mon, let's go out to eat, get a drink, see a movie, etc . . . " and it wouldn't take much cajoling to get me to say, "Sounds great!"
So, during the past few weeks I've been trying to get back in the fitness groove. Nothing crazy, just making sure I'm doing something in addition to the classes I teach at the Y. Well, this week I've gone a bit overboard. Yoga & Pilates on Monday. I did cardio and some SERIOUS lifting on Tuesday. Wednesday morning, Kerry Kavanaugh and I went to a spinning class, taught by a slave driver named Herb. Great class. I hate him. This morning, I taught kickboxing followed by a weight lifting class. (By the way, Kerry promised she would be there but she was a no-show. Sissy.) My quads are on fire. I'm walking like I'm wearing a diaper or just got off a horse or something. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! I have to teach my kickboxing/sport circuit class on Saturday morning, so I think tomorrow will be a day of rest. Speaking of kickboxing - please check out the Sound Off Extra on the sports section of our website. Keith shows me his stuff and it is VERY impressive (bet his quads are on fire now, too.)
All of this is a great reminder of how nothing's easy and nothing's free. Most anything in life worth doing or having means putting in a lot of hard work. And sometimes, it hurts. But the reward is usually worth it. Bottom line, I'm a much happier person when I'm working out on a regular basis. My husband always says the only reason I keep teaching is because I like hitting things and yelling at people. I'm not gonna lie . . . it's great stress relief!
Right now, I need to go think about the 10pm show. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and a fantastic 4th of July!

PS . . . Some of you have asked about my folks. I did finally talk to them on Father's Day. They'd just gotten home from a wedding and were preparing to leave for a birthday bash in Florida. . . . now they are back home in Nebraska, but will be leaving for Arizona in a few weeks. I think that may be their last adventure before school starts. But I'm not holding my breath.

Whew!

Sorry folks . . . it's been a nutty week and a half. Unlike Keith, I've not been on vacation at Jellystone (did that as a kid, though) but I have seriously overcommitted to too much stuff during the past few weeks. So, this week I've been working really hard on a simple word that's always been difficult for me to say to people. "No." Easier to type than to speak, but I'm working on it.
I realized on Father's Day that I really am turning into my parents. I called their house and as I was listening to the ring . . . ring . . . ring . . . I was struck by the fact that not only did I not know if my mom and dad were home, I also had no idea where in the country they might be! My folks have been quite the travelers this summer, and frankly I'm having trouble keeping tabs on where they're planning on being, and when. What's weird is that I worry about them. Remember when you were making any kind of road trip as a high school or college kid and your parents would tell you to call when you got to your destination? (Insert rolling of the eyes here) Well, mine still do that to me, but now I'm saying that to them. And, I'm getting all worked up when I don't hear from them when I think I should! On top of that, they think it's amusing!! I never DARED to snicker when I was getting a tongue lashing from my mother about not making THE CALL when I arrived safely. The cool thing is, my folks are having a ball. As my dad would say, "It's wonderful!"
So . . . I'm turning into a worrywart. About lots of things. By nature I'm pretty laid back and I'm not sure what my deal is lately. I'm not sleeping and the strangest stuff keeps me awake. "Did I remember to turn off the flat iron that I left in the bathroom at work . . . I've got to remember to call _____ back tomorrow . . . Crap, now it's already 2am and I wanted to make it to the gym in the morning . . . We have a ton of drycleaning to pick up . . . I hope I didn't make Ed mad with my smart-alek comment about his forecast . . . I need to get to the mall to return that shirt . . . Did I remember to buy coffee . . . I need to make a doctor's appointment for Michael . . . Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" It's not even anything of great consequence, just stupid stream of consciousness junk. I think I will buy some sleeping pills on my way home from work tonight.
Johnny Depp is on the cover of Newsweek. Looooooooooooove him. Love him even more after reading the article. Depp an interesting cat, but what's always struck me about him is that he really seems to be true to himself, and genuinely seems to not care what anyone else thinks about him. How wonderful. And rare. I was just freaking out about what people think of me the other day because 1) at an event I was emceeing a lady said to me, "Gosh you are a lot prettier in person than you are on tv!" and 2) after I got done teaching kickboxing one of my students said, "It really surprises me that you come to the gym with no makeup on. Aren't you embarassed to have people see you like this?" OH - MY - GOSH. Some people have no filter between their brains and their mouths!!! At any rate, after spending considerable time (a lot of it when I should've been sleeping) obsessing about these comments it occured to me that this is ridiculous! Who really cares if I look better or worse on tv or in person, and who really cares if people at the gym freak out that I look like crap without all this gunk on my face?!?!? Lesson learned from Johnny Depp article . . . be yourself. Period.
Hope to see a lot of you at the Arts Festival this weekend - Keith and I will be there Friday night competing against each other in some self-portait contest, which should be interesting. . . . it's always a great weekend of art, entertainment, people watching and food.
Speaking of food, I'm starving. . . gotta run!

PS . . . Thanks for the nice comments on the "holy grail" post - hair is another thing I'm trying to say "who cares" about lately! :)

The Holy Grail

I know what you're thinking.
I hate to disappoint, but this post will not be about the Da Vinci Code.
It is about hair.
That's right.
Hair.
Hair, like it or not, is the Holy Grail of tv news these days.
Ask anyone in the business and they will tell you that they've received more emails, phone calls and letters about their hair than about most anything they've said or done on the air.
Most of us hate this aspect of our jobs, but for some reason that's just the way it is.
And it's not just women who put up with hair criticism.
For example, John Bachman often gets accused of coloring his hair or wearing a rug. Not true. I can attest to this because I was working outside with JB on an incredibly windy central Iowa day. His hair moved (a lot). There's lots of it, and it is most definitely attached by follicles to his head!
Another colleague recently asked me about his hair. Murph came into work yesterday with a new haircut. Bachman gave him a hard time and Keith replied by saying something along the lines of, "Not all of us are blessed with hair genes like John Bachman and Bill Clinton!" He then proceeded to ask me if I thought his hair was too short. Oye!
I have gone through several hairstyles over the years (some ok . . . some horrific) and nothing causes more hoopla for a woman on television than a hair change. When I chopped all of my hair off a few years ago, I got responses ranging from "I love your new haircut - don't change a thing!" to "Oh my God. You used to be hot. I bet your husband is ____ off that you cut your hair, it's horrible!" Now, I've grown out my hair and it's the same thing all over again! One man sent me a letter saying he and his wife love it, but a woman just left me a voicemail a few nights ago saying, "I'm just so sorry about your hair. It makes you look 15 years older." That's great. Made my night.
Speaking of which . . . I need to go make sure my hair doesn't look all crazy, it's getting close to news time.
Have a wonderful weekend!

One year ago

Time flies.
I'm beginning to sound like my mother.
Don't they say that happens to everyone?

One year ago today I walked into the newsroom here at WHO to start my one year off the air, and behind the scenes. It's been a strange and wonderful learning experience, and a part of me doesn't want to go back to being on the tube. I'm sure it will be fine once I'm back in the swing of things, but today just feels very weird. It may be because I had to be up before the sun in order to take part in our morning show, and run around to various radio stations. Thanks to those of you who've taken the time to drop me a line with encouraging comments. The bottom line is, I love my job and I'm lucky to be doing what I do with a bunch of great people.

Tonight we're bringing you the latest in the CIETC salary scandal, and more on a report that the Governor's office oringally said would remain secret, but is now being released. Dave Price will tell you what's in the report, and what the Governor has to say about it.
So far this year there have been 11 motorcycle fatalities in Polk County alone. Tonight, Kerry Kavanaugh talks with cops and riders about the unsettling trend and what can be done to keep those numbers down.
Jon Cahill is following up on the tragic accident that happened in western Iowa yesterday, when three men fell from an IPTV tower. OHSA is now investigating the incident.
Listen up all you folks obsessed about aging . . . tonight at 10, Jannay Towne has a story about lunchtime facelifts! I have not yet read her script, so I'm not sure what's up with these procedures . . . tune in and check it out!
