Hello and Happy Monday, gang!
I seem to be incapable of holding a thought in my head these days, so you're getting another "Random Thoughts" blog from me this week.
I can't remember anything lately without writing myself a note. I have lists and sticky notes everywhere. For this reason it's funny to me that I can still remember all of the words to 80s songs, and I have vivid recollections that go along with them. For instance, every time I hear "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" by REO Speedwagon I remember shooting hoops with my dad in our driveway with my boom box sitting near by, tuned in to Casey Kasem's American Top 40.
Speaking of my dad, since retiring to Arizona one of his favorite topics is the weather. He got a big kick out of me writing about Season Affective Disorder and that I'm way past SAD. To him, rotten weather is fifty degrees and cloudy.
I also talk to my dad about food a lot. He is a great cook and Michael has him interested in buying a smoker. Yum. I'll just have to make sure he buys Iowa pork to put in it! Last night we also had a conversation about making sauerkraut. Out of curiosity I did some googling last week and found out there are only two ingredients. TWO. I also had no idea making your own sauerkraut was so labor intensive. My dad says he only make it once and after reading several different blogs about how to do it - I'm not surprised. Something my dad makes every year is corned beef and cabbage. I've never prepared this, but I think I will for St. Patrick's Day.
New recipes can always be a gamble. Sometimes I have whipped up some really awful meals. To Michael's credit, he's always eaten them. When we were dating I made Schezwan Chicken (spicy) because he'd mentioned in passing that he likes it. I got a little carried away with the seasoning and this stuff was snot running down your face hot. Michael was sweating bullets a few bites in and chugging water - but he ate it. God bless him.
Trying and learning new things are always a combination of challenging, frustrating and fun to me. Our "Workout of the Week" segments are a prime example of this. On a few occasions I've been embarrassed and irritated because what we're doing does not come easily to me. But it's forced me to get outside my comfort zone and push myself, and every time I've ended up feeling really good about what I've accomplished (or at least what I've tried). This also applies at work. We're transitioning everything here to HD and the new equipment is foreign to me. When our photojournalists try to explain how to do things, they might as well be speaking Swahili because I don't understand a word they're saying. Thankfully, a few of them have gone out of their way to help me. Jeff Felton even wrote up a detailed "how to" list for me. Guess what? I'm getting the hang of it! Last Friday I even managed to do what I needed to without consulting my cheat sheet. Yay! It's a small victory, but it makes me feel good about not giving up easily.
Finally - I keep meaning to share this you, but it keeps slipping my mind - shocker! A friend forwarded it to me a few months ago and it cracked me up. Enjoy!
Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Nebraska....
If your local Dairy Queen is closed from
September through May, you live in Nebraska.
If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance
and they don't work there, you live in Nebraska.
If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same
time, you live in Nebraska.
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a
wrong number, you live in Nebraska.
If "Vacation" means going anywhere south of
GRAND ISLAND for the weekend, you live in Nebraska.
If you measure distance in squares of farm land,
you live in Nebraska.
If you know several people who have hit a cow
more than once, you live in Nebraska.
If you have gone from "heat" to "A/C" in the
same day and back again, you live in Nebraska.
If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow
during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in Nebraska.
If you install security lights on your house and
garage, but leave both unlocked, you live in Nebraska.
If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife
knows how to use them, you live in Nebraska.
If you design your kid's Halloween costume to
fit over a snowsuit, you live in Nebraska.
If the I-80 speed limit is 75 mph -- you're
going 90 and everybody is passing you, you live in Nebraska..
If driving is better in the winter because the
potholes are filled with snow, you live in Nebraska.
If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter,
winter, still winter and road construction, you live in Nebraska.
If you have more hours on your snow blower than
miles on your car, you live in Nebraska.
If you find 10 degrees "a little chilly", you
live in Nebraska.
Have a great week!

Way past SAD
Hello and Happy Monday, gang!
I don't know how you're feeling, but for me this weather is really getting old. I'm not a winter person to begin with ... the cold annoys me as soon as we get past the holidays. I've always said I would rather sweat than shiver, but this year is ridiculous. Today in our afternoon planning meeting someone brought up doing a story about SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder. My response? "I'm waaaaaaay past sad!" I'm starting to get mad. In fact, the way I'm feeling really can't be articulated on the air or in this blog because of the language I would use. I'm truly out of words when it comes to talking about the snow and cold during our newscasts. "Yuck" just doesn't seem to cut it anymore! How are you coping with this record-breaking winter? Do you like this season and think it's cool (hahahaha)? Are you like me, thinking about buying a one-way ticket to somewhere south of the Equator? Fire away, and by all means let me know if you have some clever (clean) ways to describe the weather that we can all use on the tube.
A few bright spots ... the Olympics. I wasn't particularly geared up for the games this year, but I'm getting sucked in as the days progress. There's just something about watching these elite athletes compete that's incredibly compelling, even if we don't have a hometown girl like Shawn Johnson to cheer for this time around. The nasty weather also means that my house is really clean. Being cooped up inside gives me motivation to scrub everything within an inch of its proverbial life. I'm also plowing through books. The last one I finished (for a second time) was "The Lovely Bones." I wanted to read it again because of the movie coming out ... still haven't seen it, but the book is always better anyway. Now I'm several chapters in to "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown. So far it's not grabbing me the way "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels & Demons" did, but it may be because I haven't had a significant stretch of time with it yet. Michael and I have enjoyed a lot of nice nights in front of a fire because of the cold - what's not to love about snuggling with the one you love? I'm also happy about this week's "13 Cares." It's about the sweetest boy, his wonderful family and his caring classmates. They're all on a mission to raise money for a good cause - one you might have been a part of as a kid. I hope you'll tune in Wednesday at 6 to see their story.
Right now I'm out of time ... hair and makeup calls!
Have a wonderful week,

Random Thoughts
Hi folks! So ... last night I was rushing to do my weekly "Erin Off Camera" post and I accidentally put it in the "Workout of the Week" blog. Oooops! Here it is...
******************************************************************************
Hello and Happy Monday, gang!
I am working on about three different projects at once and feeling like my head my blow up, so this will be a "random thoughts" edition.
What is up with the weather?!? My poor husband has been stuck in D.C. since last week in a city that's cripled by a few inches of snow - much less 30! And now it's snowing here again. Seriously?!??
The Superbowl was fun to watch, but after that crazy interception and touchdown the suspense was gone. I like a close game and it was one until then. I didn't really have a favorite, but was pulling for the Colts because of Dallas Clark. However, it's pretty cool to see New Orleans win after everything that city and its people have been through.
The ads were underwhemling. I still can't get enough of the talking babies in the E-Trade commericals but there wasn't anything else that I loved. You?
I do not get the Lickliter fuss. I finally watched the skit over the weekend, and I just don't get it. I don't think it's that funny or that offensive. I don't get it.
How is it possible to go to Target to buy two things and spend more than $100?!?!?
One of my childhood girlfriends spent the night on Friday. There is nothing like quality time with someone who's known you forever and loves you for who you are.
Do you pay attention to expiration dates on food? I am a freak about this and I toss anything that's even one day past the date ... except for cheese. I will cut mold off of a block of cheese and eat what's left. This really grosses some people out, but I figure cheese is really just mold anyway right? I could live on wine and cheese.
Speaking of both wine and cheese and the need to burn those things off my thighs, don't miss this week's "Workout of the Week" because you'll get to see me and Sonya on a device that looks like it belongs in the torture chambers in the Tower of London! Tune in Tuesday at 5, or go to the "Workout of the Week" section on the homepage.
We also have a "13 Cares" this week about a wonderful kid spending his Fridays after school doing some really special stuff. Join us Wednesday at 6.
I'm starving ... catch ya later!

London... Rally Against Cancer ... Workout of the Week!
Hello and Happy Monday, gang!
I am finally starting to feel "normal" after a wonderful, whirlwind trip to London last week. It was rather last-minute and not at all structured, but that's kind of how we like doing things. Michael and I hit many of the main tourist spots like Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London but also spent a lot of time wandering around the city soaking up a different culture and talking to people. I'm always interested in picking people's brains about all sorts of different topics so it was fun to meet people from Britain, South Africa, Australia and Prague and chat with them. All in all it was a great getaway, although I wouldn't recommend going in January. It was cold, but at least there weren't any blizzards or ice storms!
We flew home late Friday night because we both had commitments on Saturday. Mine was the annual Rally Against Cancer. This year's speaker was Coach Mike Ditka and he made the 10th anniversary a wonderful event. Keith and I help with the event every year and it is always fun. This year attendance records were broken and people went nuts bidding on items during the live auction so I'm hoping fundraising records were set as well. Da Coach covered a lot of ground in his speech, and told a lot of great stories, but he also said if we walked away remembering one thing that he said that night he wanted it to be "A.C.E." Attitude, Character and Enthusiasm. Those are Ditka's three secrets to success and happiness. Oh yeah ... he also said Kurt Warner should absolutely end up in the Hall of Fame. The Coach also spent a lot of time critcizing the media for being so negative so I'd like to encourage you to keep sending me ideas for "13 Cares" reports.
Sonya and I start a new adventure this week and we hope you'll come along for the ride by watching the Channel 13 News at Five. Every Tuesday we'll be bringing you "Workout of the Week." You'll be getting workouts, tips from trainers, health advice from doctors, nutrition guidelines from dietitians, and we'll also explore things like physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic and even spa treatments ... the possibilities are endless! If you can't tune in at five, we will be creating "webisodes" that you can watch online and we'll also have a blog where you can comment on the week's workout and submit your own ideas and questions. Check things out on Tuesday and let me know what you think - this week you'll see me and Sonya hitting things (and sweating A LOT)!
Thanks for stopping by the blog!
